Neurology deals with the examination and treatment of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and the neuromuscular junction. Nervous system damage often appears not as an independent condition but as a complication of other organ system involvement, which is why neurological investigation requires a particularly thorough approach.
What conditions do we treat?
Cerebrovascular disorders — A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) means temporary disruption of blood supply to parts of the brain, which may cause brief speech or vision disturbance, one-sided paralysis or numbness. If symptoms do not resolve quickly, it is a stroke. The two forms are cerebral infarction (80–85% of cases, vessel blockage) and cerebral haemorrhage (about 15%, vessel rupture). Immediate intervention can save lives.
Epilepsy — A condition manifesting as recurring seizures caused by abnormal excitation of nerve cells. Symptoms may include rhythmic muscle jerking, muscle stiffening or loss of tone, and transient loss of consciousness. Treatable with medication and in some cases surgically.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) — A chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Begins at a young age with alternating relapses and remissions. Symptoms: vision loss, double vision, limb numbness, paralysis, dizziness, coordination and urinary disorders.
Parkinson's disease — Due to destruction of dopamine-producing brain cells, movement slows, muscles become rigid and tremor appears. Symptoms worsen gradually. Differentiation from similar conditions is crucial for treatment.
Dementia — A symptom complex where mental abilities decline, eventually preventing daily self-care. The most common cause is Alzheimer's disease, characterised by progressive short-term memory deterioration. Other causes include stroke, head trauma, inflammatory diseases and cerebrospinal fluid circulation disorders.
Spinal conditions — Herniated discs mean protrusion of the intervertebral discs, causing radiating pain, numbness, muscle weakness and paralysis. Lumbago is sudden severe back pain; sciatica involves pain radiating along the entire lower limb. Chronic back pain (longer than 3 months) requires thorough investigation of causes.
Other neurological conditions — Peripheral neuropathies, tunnel syndromes, neuromuscular junction disorders (Myasthenia gravis), muscle diseases, headache conditions (migraine) and nervous system tumours.

What happens during the examination?
The examination begins with a detailed medical history: the specialist maps out complaints, asks about previous conditions, medications, family history and lifestyle, and reviews earlier findings.
The physical examination checks mental status, speech, cranial nerves, motor and sensory systems, and coordination. The full examination takes approximately 30–60 minutes. Supplementary tests may be ordered if needed: imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI), ultrasound, EEG or EMG.
How to prepare
Please bring all previous medical documentation, particularly neurological examination results. For imaging studies (CT, MRI), bring both the report and the digital image files.
